So Laci Like

Laci Jordan is a designer and creative director based in Los Angeles whose bold artistic works have forced her into the spotlight. Defining herself as a multidisciplinary designer, Laci Jordan has worked in affiliation with Walt Disney, Imagineering, Creative Artist’s Agency and ABC.

Her work focuses on creating a space for openness and visibility for social minorities, especially African American women. However, the urge to become an artist was not something she held from the start.

While studying at the University of Alabama, Laci was pursuing her degree in Criminal Justice. Soon after enrolling in a creative course at the university, she completely changed her professional direction and shifted to pursuing creative direction and art.

After college she began working and landed roles in the companies mentioned above. However, she did not agree with the impingement on her creative freedom that working for these corporations brought. Soon after, Laci Jordan started working as a freelance creative director and worked with major clients. Some of these included Calvin Klein, The New York Times and Tinder.

Currently based in Los Angeles, Laci Jordan also runs ‘So Laci Like’, which is a platform that provides a creative and uncensored space where she can create and share content without any filter. This is where she documents her life and shares design inspiration to her followers.

Laci Jordan’s artistic repertoire has often been described as relentlessly bold and unapologetic. Her main focus has always been uplifting and making visible the black experience in America through her art, especially focusing on the experience of living as a black woman in America. Her work features bold and often powerfully contrasting colors, with pop culture references and figures whose major focus is on their clothing and other markers of identity.

More recently her work has been shaped by the anxiety, fear and frustrations surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. While she admitted to being on a creative block during the beginning of the pandemic she has been struck with new inspiration to keep creating relevant and inspiring art. She suggests in an interview that while there is immense tragedy and hardship going on in America, it’s an important time to create art that inspire, calls for justice, and pays homage to those who deserve it.

Over the last few months, Laci Jordan has amassed a very large following. She is well known for her unapologetic nature which comes through in her art work. With simple geometric shapes, colors and patterns, highly contrasting textures and obvious pop culture references, Laci Jordan has no qualms about being seen as a minimalistic artist. Instead she embraces her artistic voice and uses it to express the larger social concerns she sees as important to attend to.

Among the black community and especially among black women, many are grateful that a young black woman has risen to fame for telling the stories of black women through her art. Many of her followers praise her for authentically illustrating the experiences of BIPOC folks and using her creative voice to make these experiences more visible to the general public.
