Tierra Whack: CREATIVE Greatness
Tierra Whack, formerly known as Dizzle Dizz, is an American Rap and RnB artist who brings a certain level of theatrics to her music. The poeticism of her lyrics, the emotional weight of the melodies, and the shifting moods within tracks have enabled her to create a unique and thoroughly entertaining sound.
It’s clear that listeners around the world appreciate and enjoy her take on this art form, considering she had over 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify when this article was published. In fact, it was her first album, Whack World, that brought her into everyone’s sights and playlists.
The name of the album itself is indicative of her unique and arguably wacky creative expression. The 2018 album included tracks that were even 15 minutes long. These tracks showcased her ability to take her listeners on an emotional journey through her words, groove, and melody. The dynamics would also, of course, shift when she shifted the mood from playful to introspective to eventually one of deep irritation.
What was and is perhaps exciting about such tracks was the raw emotion present in the works. Whack isn’t afraid to be herself. There’s almost an unapologetic level of earnestness to the intensity of her lyrics and arrangements, and that’s not necessarily a common feature among artists in the current music landscape. Many songwriters are influenced by their labels and eventually land on designs that are radio-friendly—short, palatable tracks that can appeal to most listeners. You’re not necessarily finding that here with Whack’s music.
One could even argue that she was so determined to make music true to her that she abandoned her stage name Dizzle Dizz to use her birth name. She did release some tracks by that stage name but eventually stuck with Tierra Whack as her identity as an artist.
Tierra Whack has also shown some of that uniqueness and creativity in her music videos. While many Rap music videos are similar in various ways, these showcase interesting imagery, which also indicates her inspiration from TV shows like Sesame Street.
Whack has managed to develop a rather large fanbase in a very short time. What’s surprising is that she managed to do that despite her music being a little different (and arguably not for everyone). One could argue that she accomplished that feat because she has a variety of inspirations for her songs. In some cases, human relationships influence emotion and lyrics, and in others, inanimate objects do. Thus, her songs express various experiences, and some of them may be relatable to members of her audience.
Tierra Whack has continued to release music in the form of singles and EPs after her album. Her latest EPs are called Rap? and RnB?. Both EPs are only three songs long, but they certainly provide food for provocative thoughts. There are various young artists emerging in the global music scene, and it’s truly a joy when they’re as unique as Tierra Whack.
