SYD: PURE GENIUS

Sydney Loren Bennet, the 33-year-old American musician and singer, goes by the professional name Syd. Her professional name for formerly Syd tha Kyd. She was initially recognized as a member of the Odd Future, an alternative hip-hop collective. Later, she established her brand with the name The Internet in 2011. She released Fin, her debut solo album, in 2017, and her music career has been on the rise ever since.

Syd grew up in a musical family. Her mother aspired to be a DJ. Her uncle, Mikey Bennet, is an internationally famous reggae producer and the owner of a studio in Jamaica. Syd started singing only after she started to write her songs. She had built a small music studio in her home when she was 14 years old, where she learned the ins and outs of sound production, after which she got into song production.

She went to Palisades Charter High School for the first half of her school life but later moved to Hamilton Music Academy, which she felt was a more open-minded school than her former, where she didn’t have many friends and felt left out.

Syd was still living with her parents when she started making music. Her stage name was given to her by Ty, her older brother. She later reclaimed the name when she became a member of Odd Future. Most of the group's songs were recorded in the in-home studio that Syd had built. Syd opened for Eminem at Wembley Stadium as a part of the collective Odd Future.

On 13th January 2017, Syd released her debut single, All About Me, produced by the Internet cohort Steve Lacy. She released her second single, Body, on 24th January 2017 in collaboration with Columbia Records. Her first album, Fin, was released on 3rd February 2017. In May 2017, she started working with Dean, the Korean RnB artist, for his music video, Love. Later in September 2017, Syd released an EP, Always Never Home, as a follow-up to her debut album.

Syd was also featured in Lil Uzi Vert’s second album, Eternal Atake’s song Urgency, released in March 2020. She was also featured in many other songs, including Zayn Malik’s When Love’s Around, a song from his third studio album, Nobody Is Listening, released in January 2021.

In February 2021, Syd released her single, Missing Out, Fast Car in July 2021, and Right Track in August 2021. She released her single, Cybah, which featured Lucky Daye in March 2022. Syd was credited on Plastic Off the Sofa, Beyonce’s eighth track of her seventh album. Syd was also seen in Ce Soir, a single by Duckworth, which became a part of his third EP, Chrome Bull.

Syd’s second album, Broken Hearts Club, was released in April 2022. She was in a relationship when she started working on this album, but it was completed after her breakup. This album, therefore, has a mix of songs about love, relationships, and heartbreak.

Syd’s songs contain hip-hop, soul, neo, alternative, and RnB elements. With two albums and numerous singles to her name, Syd adds value to the music industry, and you can’t deny her pure genius.
