Meet Muroki

Muroki is a New Zealand-based singer-songwriter who has only recently started to acquire quite a large fan base. Although Muroki only has three tracks to his name right now, he has somehow managed to skyrocket up to the top of the New Zealand Indie scene, and only at the tender age of 19.

Muroki was born and raised in a small town known as Raglan on the east coast of the country. Growing up he spent his time surfing and skateboarding. Those who have gotten to know him in the last year since his first single know him to be extremely laid back and sweet, like any innocent kid who is adjusting to his new life of fame.

Muroki took up the guitar at the age of 9 and continued learning music throughout his high school years. Although his music career only began last year, he has produced music before. Alongside a few friends and musicians from high school, Muroki released his first collaborative EP in 2017, titled Dogtown and the Boogie Boys. It was here that Muroki could be heard honing in his style that mixed together R&B and Indie with his jazz and blues sensibilities.

Although the young Muroki has been writing songs and playing guitar since he was a child, his music career was sparked after meeting BENEE at a festival in Wellington. Soon, the two got to know one another musically during the first stages of the lockdown. Not long after, he would find himself joining BENEE on a sold-out tour across New Zealand. Amazingly, it was during this tour that he received the casual approval of living legend Elton John.

This began Muroki’s music career at the age of 19. In December of 2020, he released his track titled ‘Light Me Up’ along with a music video for the song. Muroki’s music is inspired by Jazz, R&B, and even reggae, and his biggest musical influences are Frank Ocean and D’Angelo. While this inspiration definitely comes out in his music, the young Muroki has captured audiences’ attention by coming out with his own unique style, featuring his smooth and soulful voice over funk-style guitar rhythms.

Recently, Muroki has managed to build his own music studio at his home. It is here that he is currently working on his new EP with BENEE’s music producer Josh Fountain. His latest release, titled ‘Wave,’ has literally made waves in the New Zealand Indie music scene. The song is another unique attempt by Muroki to merge together his various musical influences into a single package.

The release of the new track has amassed an even larger following around the young singer-songwriter who has recently announced that he will be going on another country-wide tour again. Although he has only just popped up on the international music radar, Muroki seems to be making leaps forward with every step he takes. Many are intrigued by what this musician has in store for us next.
