IDK

Born on May 24, 1992, and professionally known as IDK, Jason Aaron Mills is a Czech-American singer, songwriter, producer, and rapper. Originally from the Czech Republic, Mills was born to American parents in London, England. He spent a significant part of his childhood in Bowie, Maryland. It was here where he also started writing and making music under his original nickname, Jay IDK.

The 29-year-old singer released his first mixtape, “Sex, Drugs, and Homework,” in 2014, and only a year later, he also released his second mixtape called “SubTrap.” The idea behind his second mixtape was to make suburban trap music mainstream.

It features three singles, “Cookie Addiction,” “The Plug,” and “God Said Trap,” that were mainly produced by Skhye Hutch and mixed by Lo Mein, Delbert Bowers, and Matt Weiss. In a nutshell, the entire project management was carried out by David Kuti, Blade Thornton, and Ryan Booth, etc.

Contemporary artists often compare the work of IDK with Kendrick Lamar’s earlier production, such as Section.80. in 2011. One of his most notable releases is his debut album “Is He Real?” which was followed by a sequel to his 2018 project called “IDK and Friends.”

The project featured several peers such as Yung Manny, Wale, and Rico Nasty. In an interview with NME, the artist also revealed that his sequel to “IDK and Friends” is dedicated to struggling artists from the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. Through his work, he aims to spread unity among artists coming from the same background as him.

IDK spends a reasonable amount of time paying attention to little stories and details in his music before deeming it good enough for the mainstream audience. In his recent work, he has also tried avoiding a narrative and has simply focused on producing the sound of his city, something people can relate to when they hear the name of his city.

Five years ago, Mills was chosen as one of the primary performers at the Trillectro Music Festival, and only three months later, he also released his third mixtape “Empty Bank.” However, one of his most significant achievements so far is that his third mixtape also premiered on Forbes.

Continuing the same legacy, IDK opened for Isaiah Rashad on his 2017 tour “The Lil Sunny” and in the same year, also released his fourth mixtape called “IWasVeryBad.” Since the beginning of his career, Mills has been actively involved in all work related to the writing, production, and release of his music.

 While he has focused mostly on releasing mixtapes, the last two years have also witnessed an influx of Studio Albums, especially from 2019 to 2021. His debut album “Is He Real?” came out in 2019, followed by the second one, “USEE4YOURSELF,” in 2021.

IDK has often revealed how he wishes to use his influence for the benefit of those struggling. He makes constant efforts to be creative and put things together even better than the last attempt. His out-of-the-box approach to creating music is what makes him stand out from the rest of the bunch.
