A TOUCH OF JAZZ

Jazz is all about reinvention and challenging the norms. With every year that passes, new musicians step foot into this genre to introduce something new and unforeseen. It’s the spirit of these young artists that keeps the music, which goes back at least a hundred years, alive and well.

Regardless of where they got their beginning and how they found their passion for jazz, these aspiring musicians are willing to pull out all the stops to explore newer territories with their refreshing perspective.

Take a look at our pick of the best current jazz artists that everyone needs to keep an eye on.

Joel Ross

Born and raised in Chicago, Joel Ross, has been lucky enough to work with the likes of Christian McBride and Jon Batiste. But ‘Good Vibes’, his 2018 release, proves that he’s got his own sense of direction and a unique sound.

He’s a vibraphonist whose musicality makes him stand out against his competition. His dexterity with the instrument is truly something to behold.

Lakecia Benjamin

A Native of New York City, Lakecia Benjamin is a saxophonist who found her way to jazz through funk and soul. Her music has influences of The Meters and James Brown. She has performed with The Roots, Stevie Wonder and many others, which is a testament to her impressive musicality.

She went on a tour after her album ‘Rise Up’ came out in 2018, and also got to share the stage with Alicia Keys and Missy Elliot. She’s a young performer who’s full of promise and we can’t wait to hear more from her.

Robert Glasper

Robert Glasper, a jazz pianist, is not your ordinary jazz musician because he isn’t afraid to bend genres, but that’s also what sets him apart from his rivals. He’s also been fortunate enough to perform with famous jazz artists like Terence Blanchard and has got many successful albums under his belt.

He picked up a Grammy for the best R&B album in 2013 which just proves that he’s here to stay and make a name for himself in the music industry.

Maria Grand

Maria Grand is a saxophonist who was born in Switzerland. When she was just 20 years old, she was selected as a performer in a tribute to Von Freeman. Her debut album ‘Magdalena’ came out in 2018 and showcases her talent in the best way.

Through her music, she touches on subjects like mythology and family relationships. She has quickly become an interesting jazz musician that, we believe, everyone needs to give a listen to.

If you’re a fan of Jazz music, then you’re already familiar with the likes of Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. These people were jazz legends who helped this genre get to where it is today. However, that isn’t to say that newer and upcoming jazz musicians don’t have much to offer and should stick to tradition.

Young jazz artists are willing to take risks and put a refreshing spin on this genre of music to take it to newer heights. Give the artists we’ve mentioned above a listen and see for yourself.
