BUTCHER BROWN: A PUNCH TO YOUR SOUL
Virginia-based groove quintet Butcher Brown has made a name for itself in the music industry by being heavily influenced by jazz and funk fusion. The group was founded back in 2009 in Richmond, Virginia. Its members include Marcus Tenney, who works the saxophone and trumpet, Morgan Burrs on the guitar, Andrew Randazzo in charge of the bass, Covery Fonville for percussion, and DJ Harrison, who is a magician on the keyboards.
Butcher Brown has been a throwback to the 70s jazz funk fusion. Their music is often described as the perfect mix of R&B, funk, jazz, and hip hop, with the perfect amount of soul to tie it all together and make it sound splendid. Butcher Brown is known for their ability to break through any and all limitations of adjacent genres and instead create its own rhythm and tune to jam to. They have been playing and performing with great expertise for so long that they have formed an incredible ability to shift from one vibe to another without missing a beat or experiencing any hiccups.
The most notable feature of Butcher Brown is the 21st-century twist that they add to classical music, which allows them to feature subtle tunes of hip hop, future funk, and even garage punk into their music. In 2014, Butcher Brown released All Purpose Music, an album name that is truly fitting when considering the kind of music they produce. A year later, they followed up with Grown Folk, which received international acclamation for being a genuinely masterful music album.
During the summer of 2015, Butcher Brown produced an album called The Healer at their own studio. However, it wasn't released until two years later, when the quintet decided to let it out into the world in 2017 via Bandcamp. This was done during the same time as the release of their album Live at Vagabond.'
In the following years, Butcher Brown continued on the same trajectory. They released another Gearbox album, called Camden Session EP, in 2018. In 2019, they released an EP with WarHen called AfroKuti: A Tribute to Fela. Based on the success of their work so far, Butcher Brown was signed by Concord Jazz in 2020 and even appeared on the label. Their project together was initially written by the band's MC to be a hip-hop record. However, it evolved massively during the recording process and became a mesmerizing ode to classic big band jazz.
The quartet has toured regionally and nationally, performing live at numerous spots and gaining quite a reputation in the independent music scene and on social media. The band continues to enjoy massive success and recognition from music critics all over the country. Their cover of Rip it Up by Little Richard was even selected to be the theme of Monday Night Football in 2020.
